“We know there’s a lot of interest in that, and it’s something we’ll look at for the future. However, Sunday FrontRunner service is not included in the coming year’s financial plan. The 2016 budget hopes to build on that level of improvement with 100 new bus shelters in the six counties UTA serves. Each stop costs approximately $15,000 to $20,000 each,” said UTA spokesman Remi Barron. “We are working on finishing all stops along Riverdale Road and also Washington Boulevard in South Ogden.

In 2015, about 20 stops along Washington Boulevard received upgrades, and a dozen custom shelters were added to 25th Street. UTA is also installing more bus shelters. For UTA, the gain comes from more riders and more data about when and where people are riding, Benson said. With FAREPAY, a TRAX ride costs $2 rather than $2.50, and bus fare drops to $1.50. The expansions will continue through 2016, and UTA also plans to extend its electronic FAREPAY card promotion that gives riders 20 percent off light rail prices and 40 percent off bus fares.

The agency also increased peak-hour service on express route 455 plus added service on routes 612 and 603 - those downtown Ogden routes now run every 15 minutes on Saturdays. Those enhancements caused a 15 to 30 percent boost in ridership on some routes, Benson said. “They’re not huge, but they’re important improvements in service,” Benson said Tuesday. “We took route 470 - the long route that connects Weber County through Davis County into Salt Lake - and moved that to 30 minutes all day on Saturday.” Strong growth in sales tax revenues combined with savings in operating costs during the first half of 2015 allowed UTA to add more service options in August. That means we’ve got money that we’re able to put to the bottom line and program for services and improvements going forward into the next year.” “The good news is that for 2015, our operating expenses are about $9.5 million under our revenues. “Our financial situation this year has a lot to do with what we can plan for and program the following year,” Benson said.

These improvements are possible due to lower fuel costs, improved vehicle efficiencies and the favorable economy.

In addition, a $2 million WiFi upgrade is planned for FrontRunner’s commuter rail service. UTA Interim President and CEO Jerry Benson said the document-in-progress includes a 5 percent increase in bus service, 4.5 percent boost in rail service and 5.5 percent more hours of paratransit service. 28, Utah Transit Authority trustees will approve the agency’s tentative 2016 budget. Meantime, UTA executives will go without bonuses for at least three budget years.ĭuring its 3 p.m.
